Trail Dogs

The CMSP Trail Dogs are an all volunteer group that strives to maintain the Park trail system in great shape and enjoyable for all Park visitors. Most trails are multi-use for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. The Trail Dogs generally gather one or two days per week from Spring to Fall, weather permitting, for trail work.

Maintenance tasks normally consist of two major categories:

Corridor Maintenance - which includes removing overgrown foliage that is blocking or impeding trail routes and trees that have fallen across trails. We utilize loppers, clippers, saws, as well as motorized weed whackers to clear corridors. Typically in the spring/early summer corridor maintenance takes precedence.

Tread Repair and Improvement - focuses on ensuring that water is shed properly off our trails and reducing erosion. Tread repair and improvement includes building and repairing proper dirt and rock structures to guide water as gently as possible off our trails, as well as guiding users to stay on developed trails. These tasks include using a variety of tools such as; shovels, pick mattocks, Mcleod fire rakes, Pulaski axes, garden rakes, rock bars, and sledge hammers. As Mother Nature gets herself warmed up, tread repair and improvement, becomes the major effort.

On work days, please wear long pants, sturdy work shoes, work gloves, eye protection, and sunscreen. Bring plenty of water and a snack for break times.
